Staff

A multi and interdisciplinary staff, on purpose.

The Lab is directed by an economist and system dynamicist. Around that seat sit engineers, learning scientists, healthcare professionals, executives, and modelers. No single discipline owns a wicked problem.

Michael J. Radzicki

Professor of Economics and System Dynamics

Michael J. Radzicki is a Professor of Economics and System Dynamics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, creator of WPI’s program in system dynamics, and director of the university’s Complex Systems Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Notre Dame and his training in system dynamics modeling from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, he is a certified Rapid-I Predictive Analytics Analyst.

Professor Radzicki’s research focuses on predictive analytics, simulation science, and the application of techniques from these areas to problems in economics at the macro, industry, and firm levels, healthcare policy, and leadership. He has been invited to speak around the world in venues such as the White House, the Royal Society, the New York Stock Exchange, the United States Departments of Energy, Transportation, and Homeland Security, and Sandia National Laboratories. He has also served on the editorial board of four professional journals, as an expert witness in several court cases, and as a consultant to numerous Fortune 500 corporations. In addition to his work in economics and simulation, Radzicki is an avid golfer, wood and metal worker, and HAM radio operator. In 2006 he served as president of the System Dynamics Society.

Disciplines the Lab draws on

Economists

Macro, firm, and industry structure; behavioral and experimental evidence; the incentives that lock a system into its current path.

Engineers

Stocks, flows, delays, and capacity. The physical and technical constraints a policy story has to survive.

Learning scientists

Whether a flight simulator actually changes how people think. Study design, debrief, and evidence of transfer.

Healthcare professionals

Policy, clinical operations, veterinary medicine, and One Health — where delayed outcomes are the rule.

Business executives

The decisions leaders actually face: resource allocation, real options, and the short-run cost of a long-run redesign.

Dynamic systems modelers

The people who turn a shared diagram into a tested simulation and then into a simulator others can fly.
